FIRST EDITION: Green cloth cover with gilt titles on the spine, in very good condition, no bumping or marks. The dust jacket is also in very good condition with some slight signs of rubbing and wear, there is some bending along the upper edge of the front. The dust jacket is not price clipped. There are twenty-one illustrations within this book including the frontispiece, the last two are maps. Internally the book is clean, bright and tightly bound. This book was first published in 1990. The book is part 8 of J R R Tolkien's The History of Middle-Earth, but it is subtitled The History of the Lord of the Rings Part Three. The series is edited by Christopher Tolkien.

This takes up the story of the writing of "The Lord of the Rings" with the Battle of Helm's Deep and the drowning of Isengard by the Ents. It is the next volume in a series which looks at the ideas behind the writings of J.R.R.Tolkien.
