William Morris: The Water of the Wondrous Isles (Volume 1)

£24.99

Product description

Published Longmans Green & Co (1914). Pocket Edition. In green leather binding with gold decoration on front cover and title on spine also in gold. Top spine has some fraying and there are signs of damp staining to both back and front covers. Top edge is gold gilt. There is some age-toning to the front and end papers but the text is clean and unmarked. Contains a green silk page marker which matches the cover.

The Water of the Wondrous Isles is a fantasy novel by William Morris, perhaps the first writer of modern fantasy to unite an imaginary world with the element of the supernatural, and thus a precursor of much of present-day fantasy literature.

Stolen as a child and raised in the wood of Evilshaw as servant to a witch, Birdalone ultimately escapes in her captress's magical boat, in which she travels to a succession of strange and wonderful islands. Among these is the Isle of Increase Unsought, an island cursed with boundless production, which Morris intended as a parable of contemporary Britain and a vehicle for his socialistic beliefs.
