Palio

£19.99

Product description

The Palio of Siena is festival with perhaps a thousand years of history behind it. It is certain that "Palii alla lunga" were run as far back as the 11th century, if not earlier. The climax of the festival is the famous horse race around the Piazza del Campo in Siena. This beautifully produced book is a celebration of the history of the festival, the people and traditions, and the final contest. Included is the essay "Palio and contrade: Historical evolution," written by Giovanni Cecchini in 1958. There are some early b/w photographs plus many in colour showing the event and the race. The book has white cloth boards and black titles; there are two small corner bumps on the cover, otherwise the book is in fine condition. The jacket has light bumping creases to corners, a few light indentation marks, and slight surface rubbing to the glossy surface. The book is held inside a thick card protective slipcase. The case has general handling marks and corner rubbing, and slight peeling to the surface film on the rear top and bottom edges; closed tear to the rear lower left corner, approx. 2.5cm. A heavy item, 2.76 kg, requiring courier delivery.
