Bacon's "Half Inch" Cycling Road Maps of England and Wales

£800.00

Product description

Collection of maps by Bacon at half inch to the mile scale based on Ordnance Survey data, ostensibly for cyclists - with best cycling routes highlighted. Assumed to be from the very early years of the 20th century - 1901 census data is used in the town index on each map. Linen backed maps with hard-backed covers (covers 25 x 11.3 cm). Name of the map in gilt on a tab at the top of the front cover. A collection of 25 in all - including index map of whole of England and Wales. One map - 13, Cheltenham, missing. Maps include an index of towns on the inside of the front covers. Some maps have additional small sheets included.
The maps are housed in a leather carry case, with lock (no key) and handle to the top. The case is lined with red velvet and has a compartment divider down the middle. The inside of the lid has straps to hold a map measurer (?) which item is missing. The case is in good condition with signs of considerable use externally (scuffs, bumps at corners and edges, some stitching missing at bottom). The lid is still soundly attached, but the hinge is worn at the ends with one small (1-2cm) tear at one end. The corner of the lid has broken at the proximate side to the hinge. The lining is torn at the hinges at both sides, but intact otherwise. Case dimensions are: 28 cm high. 28 cm wide. 12 cm deep at lid.
The map condition is as follows:
