Our Touring Guide to Italy, of which this is the first edition, is in spite of its new form a real 'Baedeker', combining the traditional reliability and editorial experience of the century-old firm of Baedeker with the requirements of modern means of travel. It is the work of Baedekers Autofuehrer-Verlag, a branch of the publishing house of Karl Baedeker, and the text is to a large extent based on Baedeker's Handbooks for Northern Italy, Rome and Central Italy and Southern Italy.
Italy has always been the 'classical' country of travelling, and indeed hardly any other country can offer such a variety of scenery, from the snow-clad peaks of the Alps to the sun-drenched shores of Sicily, such a wealth of cultural monuments, witnesses to an empire that stretched from England to Africa and to powerful medieval city-states, and so many outstanding museums and galleries proudly displaying the creations of painters and sculptors who have contributed so much to the story of European art. The attempt to describe Italy in a single volume must by necessity be restricted to pointing out what is important and to arranging the information in a way which, it is hoped, will prove useful to the traveller.
