Time-Life Books 1985, facsimile reproduction of the 1853 first edition from the 'Classics of Exploration' series which preserves the historical authenticity of the work. An attractive hardback and one of a number of books from this series available.

Condition: very fine. Cover as new, fully bound in brown leather with gilt labels on spine, gilt and red borders to front board. Marble patterned end papers. Binding very tight, 344pgs. gilt edges on all sides, yellow ribbon page marker. Numerous illustrations including fold out maps, plans and wood-cuts. Publisher's card describing the book enclosed.

Written by Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) who, at the request of the British Museum, excavated sites at Nimrud and Kouyunjik both of which yielded sensational sculptures but led to the conclusion that Kouyanjik not Nimrud was the site of the ancient city of Ninevah.
