Street-Names of the City of London, 1954

£4.99

Product description

The street-names of the City of London have been the object of much interest since John Stow's days, but a systematic etymological study of them on modern lines has not been undertaken by a trained place-name student.
The Volume now presented to the public is the outcome of an independent study of the material. It is limited to the names of Old London, the City, and it gives its chief attention to early names, those found in medieval records. It claims to deal fairly fully with the history and meaning of such names, but contains only a selection of later names.
The material is arranged systematically so as to bring out types of names and their relative frequency, but any name can easily be found by help of an index.
An introductory essay discusses various problems bound up with the names, such as chronology and changes of names.

Condition-Used: Very good (Dust cover scuffed and faded in places, with one corner of inside fold cut. Contains sticker of a previous owner. Slightly foxing on the tops of pages.Fold out map in very good condition)
