Oxfam distributed hygiene items like the Oxfam bucket at Ecole Louverture, Cote Plage in Carrefour, Haiti after the earthquake.

"On walking around the camp, it was very apparent that these basic items were sincerely appreciated by those whose only protection from the elements was a thin cotton sheet or an old piece of tarpaulin salvaged from the ruins. This gentleman's smile was magnetic, and he was a real joy to meet."

Tess Williams, Oxfam Humanitarian Funding Coordinator and ECHO lead.

1.Big enough but not too heavy.

2.The plastic moulding pieces have been ground off the bottom because in many of the cultures where we work people carry buckets etc on their heads.

3.Sanitation - the bucket had to have a lid on it to keep the water in and the bugs and diseases out.

4.An insertable tap that allows you to draw water from the bucket without putting any dirty implements in it.

5.These buckets take up about a tenth of the size of the old jerry cans.
