Radio sets and shows

This gift helps people in remote communities access information on health, education and early disaster warnings by funding radio sets, training, the production of shows and the running of community radio stations.

Promoting HIV Awareness

In Thailand it is estimated that over one million women, children and men are living with HIV/AIDS. The radio gift has been used in Thailand to promote HIV/AIDS awareness. The ‘Voice for AIDS’ community radio station broadcasts programmes on AIDS awareness. Topics covered include safe sexual practices and voluntary counselling and testing. The programme is reaching people who may not otherwise of had access to information on HIV/AIDS. The radio programme is reaching an even wider audience now it is available online.

Education

In Ghana the radio gift has been used to improve school retention rates. The radio programs include discussions with education authorities and child welfare officers. Radio discussion groups have been formed, bringing together teachers, parents and pupils. In Ghana many families view educating girls as being less important than educating boys, so many of the radio discussions highlight the importance of girls’ education. The radio program has resulted in an increase in the number of children enrolling in school.
