It's good to talk, but not everybody gets the chance. This gift helps people to speak out and campaign about basic rights and overcoming injustice, like Oxfam's work to end domestic violence against women in India.
The 'We Can' campaign aims to stop people turning a blind eye to routine violence against women across South Asia, including India, by getting one million 'Change Makers' - ordinary men and women - to pledge not commit violence in their relationships and to influence other people to change their attitudes on gender discrimination and violence. Change Makers receive a resource kit in a black bag. Oxfam Unwrapped has funded 250,000 of these Change Maker kit bags.
Sneha Misra, a 'We Can' campaigner from India says: "The black 'We Can' bags have an identity of their own. They are carried around all the time. We see the languages on the bag and remember that we are sharing our struggles with our sisters in five other countries."
Piyali's story
21-year-old Piyali is a Change Maker in the city of Kolkata (Calcutta). She says: "I attended a 'We Can' seminar and the campaign struck a chord within me - it helped me speak out and break out of my restricted life ... I began by making changes in my own life and also in the attitudes of my family ... Today the scenario in our home is very different and one can see even my father helping with housework - which he never did before."
"When I discussed the campaign with my parents and brother and they saw my passion - for the first time they acknowledged that I too had a right to fulfil my own dreams and live life on my own terms ... All this has given me the confidence to take up leadership roles in the various groups and clubs in the community. I have recently become a leader at our local Self Help Group, and am also heading the cultural club. I have now enrolled to study social work by correspondence and gain practical experience by working on the campaign. I discuss gender issues with other young people through workshops ... I have tremendous confidence and hope that I can bring about positive change."
