This gift will inject a big dose of loveliness whenever and wherever it’s needed by supporting Oxfam’s work to fight poverty around the world, wherever the need is greatest. Here are some examples:
Seeds and tools
In drought-prone Mauritania, making a living can be desperately hard. Oxfam provided people in Male Commune seeds, tools and training. They put in the hard work, and now have flourishing vegetable gardens, providing food and income.
Supporting schools
Education is vital in fighting poverty. Villagers in Kakolo, Zambia, knew this and built their own small community school – then Oxfam just helped make it bigger, and supplied equipment and teacher training. Eventually they won local funding. It now has 1,200 students.
Preventing disaster
Natural disasters can be devastating, especially to poor communities forced to live in vulnerable areas. Oxfam is working in places like Sandia, Peru – helping people set up their own ‘early warning systems’, to better prepare them for frequent mud slides.
Petitions and campaigning
More than one million people signed our petition to control the arms trade - a trade fuelling conflict and misery in poor countries the world over. The result? In October 2006, the UN voted to begin work on an historic Arms Trade Treaty.
