Country gift - Mexico

This gift will go towards all aspects of our work in Mexico, including protecting indigenous communities’ rights and livelihoods.

Most of our work is in Mexico's south-eastern states - Chiapas, Oaxaca, Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatan – where the majority of the population is made up of indigenous Amerindians.

Many poor communities in this region rely on the land to make a living, but nearly 19 out of every 20 people live below the poverty line. A contributory factor is that traditionally they've had to sell what they produce to middlemen who don't pay them a fair price.

We work with local partner organisations that are helping poor indigenous communities to make a living and to protect their rights.

We work alongside local farmers to increase their productivity and to help them get a better deal for what they produce. We provide training and technical assistance, encourage growers to work together in organised producer groups, and give advice on marketing opportunities. Women are also encouraged to get involved so they can receive a share of the benefits.

In addition to such projects, we aim to reverse the negative impacts of unfair trade rules on small-scale farmers, indigenous people, and small businesses in Mexico, by lobbying governments and international bodies.
