Go fishing

This gift helps people to make more from their catch, like in Indonesia, where Oxfam Unwrapped has funded training, equipment and support to help poor and vulnerable households make a living from fishing.

Lorwembun is a village in Tanimbar, a remote island in Eastern Indonesia. The area has high levels of poverty, with 45% of households categorised as poor or very poor. Oxfam Unwrapped has provided villagers with vital equipment – like boats, nets and storage facilities – as well as training in fishing and processing techniques.

Petra's story

In 2000 Petra Kwairbatin fled violence in her hometown and arrived in Lorwembun village as a refugee. The conflict also separated her from her husband and now she lives with her only son.

She says: "I wanted to do something to improve my income but I didn't have idea and equipments to realise it." Oxfam’s training helped Petra and seven of her colleagues to learn how to make salty fish from fresh fish. Salty fish is a great source of income during seasons when the weather is bad and catching fresh fish is impossible.

Petra says: "I learnt the technique to make salty fish. Oxfam also provided us with equipments to produce salty fish. After this training, I will make and sell salty fish. I am happy to participate in this training because this will give an alternative income for me."
