“I didn’t have any animals, and my husband is quite old, so that is why I was selected (to receive goats). With these goats I am now somebody. I won’t miss food again. I’m sure that my small children will now have milk.
It was very difficult before because we used to have to go to the bush and carry (and sell) firewood so that we could buy some milk in the shop. I also sell and buy clothes. I used to have one goat, but it died during the drought. Now I am happy that I have goats that are my own, and I know that we will have food. And maybe when they multiply, I can sell one to cater for the needs of my family.
Because the goats we have been given were not enough for all the women, we have some responsibilities. When my goats reproduce, I have an obligation to give nine goats to this lady here. After I give out the nine goats, I will not start selling animals immediately. I will let them reproduce and then at one point I’ll sell, but only when I have need.
I’ll sell a goat to buy beadwork, because the beads have a lot of profit. And then with the profits I will educate my children. I will also buy good food, and eventually I hope I can build a tin-roofed house, because I have seen others do that.”
