This gift provides farmers with a grown sheep or goat and a baby. They get all the immediate benefits of owning a goat or sheep plus when the little one gets older, there’s the prospect of all the additional milk and fertiliser.

In Aftout in Mauritania, vulnerable women have received goats from Oxfam Unwrapped to help them improve the nutrition and . The goats were either pregnant or nursing young. A vet supervised the process by vaccinating goats and providing the new owners with parasite treatment and vitamins.

Oumoulmouminine’s story

Oumoulmouminine MintSaîd is from Bouval in Mauritania. She says: "I thank God and Oxfam. I received 5 female goats, one of which has a kid; two months later two others gave birth. I look after my goats and they are very precious to me. Every day I give them hay and some wheat and food leftovers and in return I get three litres of milk a day. My children and I are in very good health thanks to this gift from the heavens."
