This buffalo leather messenger bag is made by rural villagers in the Himalayan Mountains using traditional tanning methods. Regular leather tanning and dyeing can have disastrous ecological consequences; these eco bags are tanned using only natural salt and lime and the tan colour of the leather is totally natural and undyed which means we think these are the most environmentally friendly leather bags you can buy. The bags are then treated with eco-friendly mustard oil to condition the naturally tanned leather, and ensure they soften and improve with age. This messenger style has a full shoulder strap with cutaway corner design feature, a deep front pocket for all those essentials you want to hand, toggle closure, long shoulder strap and amazingly strong, decorative hand-stitched seams. Since 2005 Hatti Trading have been making a difference to stigmatised and disadvantaged young women in Nepal through Fair Trade employment in the production of beautifully made hand bags.

For the collection in which the elephant backpack features, Hatti Trading worked with a wonderful organisation in Kathmandu which provides employment for women who otherwise can’t get work, including survivors of human trafficking and single mothers.  They provide health benefits, child education, fair wages and good working environments, all under fair trade conditions and are dedicated to promoting women’s rights in a country where women are considered second class citizens. The elephant backpack is hand made from felt, which is ultra strong, durable, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
