The relationship between Divine and its cocoa producer cooperative Kuapa Kokoo is one of the most impressive and integrated of all Fairtrade agreements.
Kuapa Kokoo (‘Good Cocoa Farmers Company’) was established in 1993 to combat the threat to farmers during the liberalisation of the cocoa market in Ghana. In 1997, Kuapa Kokoo joined forces with two other organizations to found Divine and began selling their own chocolate bar – an initiative that put the farmers’ cooperative far higher up the value chain. Today, Kuapa Kokoo has greater than 40,000 members in 1300 village societies who collectively own 45% of the shares in Divine and have two representatives sitting as Directors on their board. As a result, along with gender equity, producer training and fair wages, this position of influence gives the smallholders the right to be heard and a strong voice in defining the aims of Divine Chocolate Ltd – who are still driven, to this day, to improve the livelihood of smallholder cocoa producers in West Africa.
