Vintage handwoven camel hair wedding blanket / herder's rug, by the Fulani nomad tribe, Sahara-based. Purchased in Kano (northern Nigeria) 1961. Approx 4'4" x 8'6". Excellent condition, as new, no odour.
Fulani blankets were originally made for a Fulani bride and groom as a wedding gift.
Many of the Fulani people of Northern Nigeria are pastoral nomads. During the winter months of November to January, Fulani cattle herders need protection from the cold, as well as from mosquitoes. These blankets were produced to meet this need.
This fine heirloom blanket is handcrafted from camel hair on a heddle loom, producing strips which are joined to produce the final product. Has a pattern of lozenges, triangles, chevrons, lines and spots, to which tassels are added. This khasa makes a magnificent wall hanging, large throw or bedspread.
