CATCH 22 - Mike Nichols superbly directed this cinematic adaptation of Joseph Heller's scathing black comedy, the tale of a small group of flyers in the Mediterranean in 1944. There are winners and losers, opportunists and survivors. Separately and together, they are nervous, frightened, often profane and sometimes pathetic. Almost all are a little crazy! Catch-22 is an anti-war satire of epic proportions.
BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID - One of the most popular westerns ever made, this Academy Award winning classic blends adventure, romance and comedy to tell the true story of the west's most likeable outlaws. No-one is quicker that Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) when it comes to get rich quick schemes, and his sidekick Sundance (Robert Redford) is a wizard with a gun. When these two bungling bank and train robbers tire of running from the law, they set out for Bolivia with Sundance's girlfriend (Katharine Ross). Though they can barely speak enough Spanish to communicate ''This Is A Stick Up'', that's only a minor detail to the two nicest ''bad guys'' who ever rode the west.
DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (SEALED) - David Lean demonstrates again why he's a peerless filmmaker of substance and scale, directing Boris Pasternak's tumultuous tale of Russia divided by war and hearts torn by love. Epic images abound: revolution in the streets, an infantry charge into No Man's Land, the train ride to the Urals, an icebound dacha. Golden Globe Best Actor Award winner Omar Sharif plays the title role, in love with Lara (Julie Christie) and caught up in the tidal wave of history. Hauntingly scored by Maurice Jarre and full of indelible performances, Doctor Zhivago is a movie-making wonder.
REPO MAN - Video Grammy award winning producer Michael Nesmith presents this outrageous contemporary comedy combining the seedy world of automobile repossession with science fiction. The off-the-wall 'anything goes' tale featured a crazed ensemble cast led by Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez. As ace 'Repo-Men' the duo are out to beat ruthless government agents, UFO cultists, hired thugs, a lobotomised nuclear scientist and the infamous Rodriguez Brothers to an incredibly valuable '64 Chevy containing a secret that can change the course of civilisation overnight!
BULLITT - His new assignment seems routine: protecting a star witness for an important trail. But before the night is out, the witness lies dying and cool no-nonsense Detective Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) won't rest until the shooters - and the kingpin pulling their strings - are nailed. From opening shot to closing shootout, Bullitt crackles with authenticity: San Francisco locations, crisp dialogue, and to the letter police, hospital and morgue procedures.
THE SHINING - Think of the greatest terror imaginable... Is it a monstrous alien? A lethal epidemic? Or as in this harrowing masterpiece from Stanley Kubrick, is it fear of murder by someone who should love and protect you - a member of your own family? From a script he co-adapted from the Stephen King novel, Kubrick melds vivid performances, menacing settings, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone of the macabre. In a signature role Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, who's come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker with his wife (Shelly Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd). Torrance has ever been there before - or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder...
