All seven episodes from the second series of the 1980s ITV sitcom starring Thora Hird as indefatigable Salvation Army Captain Emily Ridley. Written by Dick Sharples and co-starring Patsy Rowlands and Geoffrey Bayldon, the series follows Emily as she attempts to bring her own unique brand of salvation to the quiet little Yorkshire town of Brigthorpe. Episodes are: 'Retirement', 'Repentance', 'Counselling', 'Poor Box', 'Luncheon Club', 'Mobile Canteen' and 'Struck Down'.
In my opinion, the second series of 'Hallelujah!' was even better than the first. These seven episodes were first broadcast on ITV in 1984 and are truly laugh out loud gems. It's a shame that they aren't better known, it's wonderful British comedy.
Captain Emily Ridley (Third) is back and this time she has been sent to the quiet Yorkshire town of Blackwick. The fun of the first series was that this barmy Salvation Army woman was sent to a place where there was no trouble at all (despite her attempts to find it) but now, there are plenty of dodgy characters for her to sort out, she is determined that these 'sinners' will be saved.
I think it a real shame that this funny family show only ran for two series because on the strength of these episodes, I would loved to have seen more.
Thora Hird is hilarious in this, I still regard it as one of her best roles. This much missed performer had real comic timing and was one of our finest character actresses. Luckily, her vast TV and film work still lives on and continues to entertain.
