This work could possibly also be considered to be a five-movement symphony, as it seemingly follows a somewhat symphonic tradition of : Allegro ; Allegretto ; Andante ; Allegretto ; Presto. However, Bela Bartok titled it as "Concerto for Orchestra" because, as he saw it, both single instruments and also, groups of instruments, during the piece, are so often treated in a highly soloistic manner.
Bartok had just recovered from serious illness, when he commenced work on "Concerto for Orchestra", and this is reflected in the order of the moods, within the work - a gradual transition from the sternness of the first, to the jesting of the second, to the lugubrious death-song of the third, and finally, to the life-assertion of the fifth.
It was an immediate success in his adopted country, the US, and brought the composer belated recognition from the American public.
