Exotic Nights - Andre Kostelanetz & Orch. perform various world pieces 1966 - SS 62917

£4.99

Product description

Andre Kostelanetz (1901-80) was a Russian-born conductor, who moved to the USA in the 1930s.

The tracks on this album, are from composers all over the world, and the performance-styles (especially reflected with the instruments used) of each piece, reflect the musical styles of their respective titular nations.

Side One :-
1) Brazilian Dance, composed by Camargo Guarnieri (a performance that is 60s-modern in spirit, but also employs traditional rhythmic vitality of South America)
2) Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints, composed by Alan Hovhaness (uses xylophone, and is a series of "mood pictures")
3) Dance of the Persian Slaves, composed by Mussorgsky (seductive ballet piece, that uses the pulsating rhythms and vibrant colours of the Near East)

Side Two :-
1) Night of the Tropics, composed by Louis Gottschalk , arr. Shanet (charming and scintilating)
2) Sea of the Spring, composed by Japanese composer Michio Miyagi (suggests Japan in the spring, employs the Koto {an ancient instrument})
3) Cordoba, composed by late 19C Spaniard Isaac Cordoba (evoking the Great Mosque of Cordoba, one of Spain's magnificent cathedrals, especially in the nocturne that begins the piece. A spirited dance follows, interrupted by a beautiful melody with Guzlas {primitive wooden stringed instruments}).

Records grdaed visually to RRPG grades (record/sleeve) EX-/EX-.
