(Early Sixties staging of Beethoven's two-act, rare foray into opera, starring soprano Christa Ludwig as Leonore, and tenor Jon Vickers as Florestan, with the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by the legend Otto Klemperer).
Ludwig van Beethoven's 1805 opera, is set in Seville, eighteenth century Spain.
The plot centres, around the heroic female character, Leonore, wife of Florestan, a young nobleman. He has been seized and imprisoned, by Pizarro, the Seville prison governor - but this was an illegal act, it transpires, motivated by the righteous nobleman exposing Pizarro's crimes.
Leonore decides, to act for her husband's freedom, and save him from execution ... disguising herself as a young man, alias Fidelio, she obtains employment at the prison, as assistant to Rocco, chief gaoler. The twists and turns of the opera, unfold, and the work concludes, with Leonore saving her husband from, Pizarro's dagger.
