1) Avon Valley, Warwickshire, rec.April 1962 : a double-chimney 'King George V' 4-6-0 pulling Wolverhampton-London train goes down 1:110 gradient, past Hatton North Junction. It dashes through the short level section at Hatton Station, then heads down 1:110 hill, towards Warwick. In distance, doub-chim 'KIng Richard I' no.6027 brings 13-coach train into the climb out of Avon Valley. The powerful exhaust-beat merges with spring bird song. Goes into cutting and under road bridge. Deafening noise at Hatton Station, on towards Birmingham, meanwhile sound of a signal arm crashing back into position. 2-6-2 T no.4176 starts from Hatton Stn. with train load of cars. Another engine on down loop, whistles, as 4176 takes car train down gradient, towards Warwick.
2) Princes Risborough, Bucks, rec.Feb 1961 : double chimney 'King William IV' no.6002 waits at Princes R. station, to pull Liverpool-London express. Echoes from the hills, as it whistles to the 'right away' signal. Majestically pulls heavy train out of station, last lap of journey to London. Slips on greasy rails, then blasts under road bridge, onto single line cutting, with easier gradient, 1:167. Goes toward Saunderton Tunnel, carriage lights and red tail lamp disappear into deep dark. Same loc., rec. Jan 1957 : 0-6-0 no.2243 starts out from up-loop, pulling wagons from Banbury. Heads for Saunderton Tunnel, passing a 2-6-2 T no.6146, pulling goods from High Wycombe, which is going down 1:88.

4) Chalford, Gloucs, rec.Mar 1964 : 0-4-2 PT no.1451 approaches Chalford Station, with single coach push-and-pull from Gloucester. Waits at station, then pulls out at sidings, taking water and short rest, then starts back down valley to Stroud. Abergavenny, South East Wales, rec.Sep 1958 : 2-6-0 no.7322 pulls goods slowly up 1:82 hill, from Abergav. stops by adverse signals, halting in deserted junction station. Meanwhile, an express pulled by 'Earl of Eldon' no.5055 comes tearing past, down toward Abegav. and Pontypool Road. Signals clear, no.7322 makes clean start, despite 1:82 gradient, slowly leaves station, to tackle long 1:95 climb to Llanvihangel.
