Il Matrimonio Segreto - Domenico Cimarosa (an 18C Italian comic opera masterpiece 2 CDs)

£5.99

Product description

Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801) was a composer, who was very much influenced by the Neapolitan School of Music. This School is regarded as the first music-movement that placed a great deal of emphasis, on the passions, emotions and feelings, of the language of music.

Cimarosa composed more than eighty operas in his lifetime, although the work featured on this compact disc, "Il Matrimonio Segreto" (1792), is his most famous piece. Its premiere, early that same year, in Vienna, was an out-and-out triumph, and it is, today considered THE comic masterpiece of 18C Italian opera.

Domenico based the work, on a libretto by Giovanni Bertati, which was, in turn, inspired by both, the English comedy, "The Clandestine Marriage" by G Colman & D Garrick, and also the French text, "Sophie, ou le mariage cache" by Laboras, de Mezieres and Riccoboni. Aspects of the work, include its style, in which wit and tenderness are found in equal measure.

There is also the psychological insight into the characters, balanced by the brilliant musical inventiveness, but all of this, can be considered, as being within, the equilibrium of the whole opera. At the time, audiences also appreciated "Il Matrimonio Segreto", for being free of both, vulgarity and affectation.

This recording is from 1950.
Disc One (77:52) contains the opening "Sinfonia", a six-and-half minute piece, followed by the whole of Act One, twenty consecutive pieces of opera.
Disc Two (54:41) contains the whole of Act Two, sixteen consecuitve pieces of opera.

The accompanying, 67-page booklet, contains full libretto, in Italian only.

Disc One is in VG+ condition.
Disc Two is in EX- condition.
