(reproduction of the performance broadcast on BBC Radio3, on 18th December 1984, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Norman Del Mar.)
Frederick Delius embarked on the composition of a whole series of operas, at a time when he only had around 19 or 20 songs published under his name, and nothing else ; 'Irmelin' was the first, and largest, of these operas, worked on during 1890-92, with the libretto written by himself.
The synopsis merges two tales from different countries and epochs : that of Irmelin, the princess who rejects in turn a series of suitors (mediaeval in origin), whilst that of the Princess and the Swineherd is a fairy tale adapted by Hans Christian Andersen.
In this BBC Radio 3 staging, Irmelin is played by Australian soprano, Eilene Hannan, her father The King is played by the baritone Michael Rippon, and tenor John Mitchison plays Nils, a Prince and Swineherd to another character, Rolf.
