Irmelin - Delius (his first & largest opera 3 EX+ LPs rare box-set - BBC 3002)

£60.00

Product description

(reproduction of the performance broadcast on BBC Radio3, on 18th December 1984, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Norman Del Mar.)

Frederick Delius embarked on the composition of a whole series of operas, at a time when he only had around 19 or 20 songs published under his name, and nothing else ; 'Irmelin' was the first, and largest, of these operas, worked on during 1890-92, with the libretto written by himself.

The synopsis merges two tales from different countries and epochs : that of Irmelin, the princess who rejects in turn a series of suitors (mediaeval in origin), whilst that of the Princess and the Swineherd is a fairy tale adapted by Hans Christian Andersen.

In this BBC Radio 3 staging, Irmelin is played by Australian soprano, Eilene Hannan, her father The King is played by the baritone Michael Rippon, and tenor John Mitchison plays Nils, a Prince and Swineherd to another character, Rolf.

Side One : Act I - Irmelin's Room in the Royal Castle.
Side Two : 1) Act I (conclusion) 2) Act II Scene 1 - A Swamp in the Forest.

Side Three : 1) Act II Scene 2 - A Hall in Rolf's Stronghold 2) Act II Scene 3 - In the Mountains.
Side Four : Act III Scene 1 - A Hall of the Royal Castle (six months later).

Side Five : Act III Scene 1 (conclusion).
Side Six : Act III Scene 2 - Outside the Royal Castle.
