This box-set contains a recording of the classic, 1962 Rome Opera House production of Giacomo Puccini's "La Boheme". It stars the celebrated Swedish tenor, Nicolai Gedda, as the penniless poet, Rodolfo, while his romantic partner in the story, Mimi the seamstress, is played by the legendary Italian soprano, Mirella Freni. The music is supplied by the Rome Opera House Orchestra, conducted by the American, Thomas Schippers.
In the synopsis, Rodolfo, who shares a meagre lodgings with Schaunard the musician, Marcello the painter, and Colline the philosopher, falls passionately in love with Mimi. For a brief period, they are happy together, but this happiness is threatened, when Mimi becomes gravely ill.
Rodolfo makes the painful decision to separate from Mimi, due to the fact that he cannot afford, the medicine nor care, that she needs. However, near the end of her life, Mimi returns to Rodolfo's lodgings, embracing him. Despite Rodolfo and his friends best efforts however, Mimi passes away ...
