La Traviata - Verdi (classic 1977 staging of opera starring Cotrubas & Domingo, 2 CDs)

£6.99

Product description

This two-CD set consists of a recording from 1977, namely a classy, and classic, staging of Giuseppe Verdi's popular opera, "La Traviata", starring Romanian-born soprano, Ileana Cotrubas (photo) as the leading female character, Violetta, with legendary Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, as leading male character, Alfredo.

'La Traviata' is Italian for 'fallen woman', namely Violetta : Her reputation precedes her, within the high-class social circles of early 19C Paris, and causes no end of problems, in the course of her relationship with Alfredo (Violetta adds to her reputation, at the beginning of the opera, because she is in a relationship with a baron, when Alfredo first declares his love for her), and it is this reputation, that leads Alfredo's father, Giorgio (played, in 1977, by baritone Sherrill Milnes), to try to break up the relationship, for the sake of the imminent marriage of Alfredo's sister, and her partner.

After much anguish, Violetta reluctantly agrees to Giorgio's pleading, and writes an emotional missive to Alfredo. However, he mistakenly believes Violetta's former baron lover (played, in 1977, by baritone Bruno Grella) is responsible for forcing her to break off the relationship, and then confronts the baron when he (baron) and Violetta reunite. A duel between Alfredo and the baron takes place ...

Fortunately, neither suitor dies, in the duel, although the baron is wounded. Giorgio, Alfredo's father, changes his mind, on the subject of his son's relationship with Violetta, but is it too late ? because Violetta is dying from tuberculosis ...
