Gioachino Rossini's (1792-1868) two-act opera, "Le Comte Ory", has a synopsis set at the time of the Crusades, whereby most of the French noblemen have left for Palestine ... except for a few, including the romantically-minded Count Ory. He has designs on the beautiful Countess Adele, whose brother, Count de Formoutiers, is away fighting.
The course of the two acts, follows the somewhat-comical attempts by Ory, to court Adele, amidst the backdrop, of the toing-and-froing of a Mother Superior and her nuns, and the startling news, that the crusaders are soon to be back!
