Legendary Polish-born conductor Rodzinski, and the music of six European composers 2 CDs

£6.99

Product description

Artur Rodzinski (1892-1958) was born into a Polish military family, in Dalmatia. He spent WWI in Vienna, studying first law, then music (the latter as a pupil of : Joseph Marx ; Franz Schreker ; Franz Schalk and Emil von Sauer).

Spending a few more years, back in his birth-nation, Rodzinski made his conducting debut in 1920, in Lwow, followed by appearances in both concert and opera, in Warsaw. Fellow-Pole and -conducting legend, Leo Stokowski heard him there in 1924, and immediately invited Rodzinski to be his assistant with the Philadelphia Orchestra in the US, a position Rodzinski held until 1929.

He then led four major US Orchestras, in succession : L.A. (1929-33) ; Cleveland (1933-43) ; N.Y. (1943-47) ; and, Chicago (1947/48). The effects of this immense workload, on his health, plus conflicts with management, precipitated severe health problems, and Rodzinski conducted little between 1948-52.

He spent his final years in both Italy and the US, his final performances being "Tristan & Isolde" in Chicago, 1958 (the recording of selections from this Richard Wagner opera, are from eleven years earlier, in the same city).
