Claudio Monteverdi's opera, with a libretto by Giovanni Francesco Busenello, was premiered in Venice, in the 1643 carnival season. It describes how Poppaea, mistress of the Roman emperor Nero, is able to achieve her ambition and be crowned empress.
The eighteen-page, LP-sized booklet (photo four), as well as black-and-white photos of this 1962 production of l'Incoronazione di Poppea, contains :-
- a cast list,
- a 3-page history of Monteverdi's life and other works,
- a synopsis (which includes a detailed description of the contents of each of the album's four sides),
- and, finally, all of the lyrics, in both English and Italian (8 pages).
