The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, was so named, in honour of the US citizen who won the first Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, in 1958, which heralded a new era in cultural relations between the Western World and the Eastern Bloc, as well as China.
Jon Nakamatsu, another US citizen, won the 10th Van Cliburn Competition, staged in 1997, the first American to have done so, since 1981. Immediately following his victory, Nakamatsu, was invited to replace the legendary Vladimir Ashkenazy, in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as soloist with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Numerous live and recording work have since ensued.
