O Captain! My Captain! (musical intrprttn of W Whitman poem)/ Autumn Boughs/ Symph Study - Stephen Watson 1997 CD

£6.99

Product description

A cantata for baritone, chorus and orchestra, " O Captain ! My Captain ! " was written by Stephen Watson in the early 90s, as a musical interpretation of the work, by 19C US poet Walt Whitman. The poem was originally part, of a Whitman collection entitled, "Memories of President Lincoln".

The nature of Watson's interpretation, is symphonic with unifying motives which occur as signposts to the structure. The music reflects both the intense involvement of the sea in human affairs and its omnipotent indifference to human fortunes ; the anguish of loss ; the symbolism of innocence ; and the consumatory release from the cares of life.
O Captain ! My Captain ! , by Watson (26:36) :-
1) {intro} 2) Would you hear of an old-time sea-fight ? 3) Stretch'd and still lies the midnight 4) The Captain on the quarter-deck 5) Near by the corpse of the child 6) Black and impassive guns 7) O Captain ! My Captain ! 8) My Captain does not answer

"Autumn Boughs" for string orchestra, is a study in moods and emotion ; autumn hues and light colour the piece and guide its progress. As its title suggests, one can hear November winds whistling through the tree tops and fallen leaves swirling around, but there are also moments of near stillness and reflection ...
9) Autumn Boughs , by Watson (13:20)

The Symphonic Study, that rounds off the compact disc, was written and revised in the mid / late eighties. As its title suggests, form and sonority provide the impetus for its composition : the structure derives from sonata form, and sonorities are an integral part of its development, so the full range of the large modern symphony orchestra - requiring triple woodwind and harp, and optional piano - is used to provide thematic unity as well as contrast.
10) Symphonic Study , by Watson (16:43)

The CD is in EX+ condition.
