Organ works "Les Corps Glorieux" & "Diptyque" - Messiaen (20C French composer CD)

£5.99

Product description

It seems that many French composers, are first destined to be known as, organists, or otherwise, as composers of organ music. From Faure, to Saint-Saens, to the many others (including such names, as Attaignment, Titelouse, de Grigny, Couperin, Franck, Widor, and Vierne), who, in terms of time-scale, end in Olivier Messiaen, who died in 1992, four years after this compact disc was released.

Messiaen was born in Avignon in 1908, but lived and worked in Paris since very early in his life. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, under Marcel Dupre , from whom he learnt many organ-playing techniques, while also being tutored by Paul Dukas, in the art of composition. Messiaen was to be a supreme composer of organ music, for more than six decades ...

The organist, on the two early-eighties recordings on this compact disc, is Jennifer Bate, who was one of Olivier's favourite players. He said of her "Jennifer is an excellent organist, not only for her virtuosity, but for her musicianship and sensitivity in choosing her timbres. She is a really accomplished musician who loves what she plays, and knows how to make others love it, too."
