Rudyard Kipling - Just So Stories Vol. 1

£14.99

Product description

A classic of children’s literature and one of Rudyard Kipling’s best known works, this vinyl contains readings from Michael Hordern, Barbara Jefford and Richard Johnson of the highlights of the Just So Stories book, first published in 1902.

Kipling originally wrote the tales as bedtime stories to read to his daughter, Josephine, and the stories describe fantastical accounts of how various animals obtained their distinctive features. If Kipling varied by a single word, Josephine would wake up and correct him, and so the stories became known as 'Just So Stories' as they had to be told in exactly the right way.

This 2 x LP Vol. 1 features 7 of the ‘Just So’ tales:

How the Whale Got His Throat – why larger whales eat only smaller prey.
How the Camel Got His Hump – how the camel got his hump as a punishment for being lazy.
How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin – how rhinos obtained bad tempers and folds in their skin.
How the Leopard Got His Spots – how leopards obtained their spots.
The Elephant’s Child – why the elephant’s trunk is so long.
The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo – how the kangaroo got long legs and a tail.
The Cat That Walked By Himself – how man domesticated all wild animals save for the cat who wished for greater independence.

Both LPs are in very good condition and do not appear to have been played much as there is minimal damage to the spindle hole. The spine and the cover show some minimal wear. The cover itself features beautiful illustrations taken from the original editions of the the 'Just So' publications.

The stories are told in a whimsical and comical manner. Although they originated as stories for children, modern-day critiques focus on the literary significance and writing style. Kipling often invented words based on the dialect and language he heard in India. For children, they are a fantastic collection of delightful tales, but adults and fans of Kipling will also gain a lot from the beloved stories.

A must for literary fans.
