Six Concertos for strings and harpsichord - Charles Avison (18C Geordie composer - ASD 3842)

£5.99

Product description

Charles Avison (c1710 - 1170), who was born, and lived all his life, in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, was one of the best known musicians in Britain, in the 18th century, although he was even more well-known, as a music critic. In all, his compositional output, consisted of 50 concertos, 3 volumes of sonatas for harpsichord, plus an additional 2 more volumes for harpsichord and violin, and, finally, many string quartets and trios.

This album showcases six of Avison's "concerti grossi", a form of string composition created in late 17th century Italy. One of the Italian innovators was Arcangelo Corelli, and his work is perhaps the most obvious to be detected, in its influence on Avison's own composition style.
