Solomon (famous UK pianist 1920s-50s) plays Concertos by Grieg & Schumann - ASD 272

£5.99

Product description

English-born Solomon Cutner enjoyed two separate, successful careers as a pianist. From the age of 8 until his early teens, he was one of the most celebrated child prodigies of his era - a national phenomenon in England right up until the time of World War I. However, he disappeared from the musical scene for a number of years, emerging again in the late 1920's as a mature player ; this second, now international, career would last through World War II and into the 1950's.

Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor, is typical of the composer's warm, tender, poetic expressions of Norwegian national sentiment. Grieg was aged 25, in 1868, when he composed the piece, and it made a favourable impression at once, both with the general public, and also fellow musicians, especially Ferenc Liszt.
Side One : Piano Concerto in A minor, by Grieg, Op.16 :-
1) I Allegro molto moderato - Cadenza - Tempo I
2) a) II Adagio b) III Allegro moderato molto e marcato - Andante maestoso

Robert Schumann made three abortive attempts to compose a piano concerto before this well-loved work appeared in 1846. Even that was accomplished in a fortuitous way. For in 1841, the year after his marriage to Clara, Robert composed a Fantasia for piano and orchestra. To this, four years later, he added an intermezzo and finale, giving it the normal three-movement form of a concerto.

The additions were fully justified by the charm and melodic invention Schumann brought to their composition. In its final form the concerto was first performed at Leipzig on January 1846, by Clara.
Side Two : Piano Concerto in A minor, by Schumann, Op.54 :-
1) I Allegro affettuoso - Andante espressivo - Tempo I - Cadenza - Allegro molto
2) a) II Intermezzo (Andantino grazioso) b) III Allegro vivace

Records graded visually to RRPG grades (record/sleeve) EX-/EX-.
