Gustav Mahler's (1860-1911) Fifth Symphony, was composed in 1901/02, while the composer was still in the midst of preparing his Third Symphony premiere. It marked a radical turning point in Mahler's symphonic pattern ; gone are the philosophical programmes, songs and choral movements of the first four, which Gustav regarded as a self contained "tetralogy".
The Fifth symphony has an increased density and virtuosity, within its orchestral texture. This caused Mahler much trouble and revision, while composing the Fifth, not least because it reflected a constantly self-renewing, and proliferating, stream of musical invention.
Indeed, the Fifth Symphony, can be said to represent a piece of Gustav's on-going musical biography.
