The Flying Dutchman - Wagner (opera about redemption through true love 2 x CDs)

£6.99

Product description

"The Flying Dutchman" (German "Der Fliegende Hollander") was premiered in Dresden, in 1843, with Richard Wagner, himself, conducting the orchestra. The synopsis concerns the legend of the ghostly Dutchman, who is condemned to sail the seas through eternity, until he can find a wife who is true to him.

It happens that the sea captain Daland, meets such a ghostly man, on the coast of Southern Norway, who arrives on a ghostly ship. He offers Daland a chest of gold, in return for Daland's daughter's hand in marriage. Then, in Act Two, coincidence again ! Daland's daughter, Senta is, as it happens, obsessed by that very legend, and dreams of rescuing the Dutchman from his fate.

After Senta meets the Flying Dutchman - to the disapproval of the huntsman Erik, Senta's former lover - there is much merrymaking in Senta's hometown, as they celebrate releasing the Dutchman from his fate. Then, twin events : the ghostly ship arrives on the shore, and Erik tries to win Senta back ; it looks as if the Flying Dutchman is, once again, destined to sail the seas forever, but Senta throws herself into the sea, declaring her eternal love for the Dutchman. And, the opera closes, with a vision, seen by all, of Senta and the Dutchman ascending to heaven.

This is a recording of a 1955 staging of the popular Wagner opera, starring Herman Uhde as the Dutchman ; Ludwig Weber as Dalland ; Astrid Varnay as Senta ; and Wolfgang Windgassen as Erik ; plus others in supporting roles.
