This two-compact disc box-set, is a recording of the 1989 staging, in Toulouse, Southern France, of the classic Georges Bizet 1863 opera, "The Pearl Fishers". It stars : soprano Barbara Hendricks (cover) as Leila ; tenor John Aler as Nadir ; bartitone Gino Quilico as Zurga, and bass Jean-Philippe Courtis as Nourabad.

The synopsis concerns the belief of Ceylonese pearl-fisherman, that in order to achieve a good harvest of pearls, they must be sung to by a consecrated virgin, whose song will also ward off the storms. The name of the virgin in this case, is Leila, and she is the subject of a love rivalry between the fisherman Nadir, and the fisherman's leader, Zurga ...
