The Violin Concertos , by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Antonin Dvorak CD

£5.99

Product description

It was in early 1878, in the Swiss town of Clarens, that Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840-93) set to work on his one, and only, Violin Concerto. Iosif Kotek, the violinist and felllow Russian composer, had accompanied Pyotr to the resort, and the pair set about playing through a great deal of music.

There was one piece, in particular, that excited Tchaikovsky, namely Frenchman Edouard Lalo's recently published, "Symphonie espagnole". Several days later, the Russian started work on his own Violin Concerto, drawing inspiration from what he described as the "freshness, lightness and piquant rhythms" of Lalo's work.

Some eight or nine days later, Pyotr's sparkling Violin Concerto was complete.

Violin Concerto in D major, op.35 by Tchaikovsky (38:55) :-
1) I Allegro moderato 2) II Canzonetta : Andante 3) III Finale : Allegro vivacissimo

Antonin Dvorak's (1841-1904) only Violin Concerto, is known as a musically-demanding work. It was composed in 1880, the Czech composer dedicating the piece to Joseph Joachim, a Hungarian violinist, who had also been a supportive, earlier companion of Johannes Brahms.

Violin Concerto in A minor, op.53 by Dvorak (33:35) :-
4) I Allegro ma non troppo - Adagio ma non troppo 5) II Allegro giocoso ma non troppo

The CD is in EX condition.
