1) Bromsgrove, Worcs, rec. 1959: Engine climbs Lickey Incline. The climb is 2 miles long, and 1:37 - north-bound trains usually given banking assistance. Followed by a Bristol-Bradford passenger train - 42922 -waiting to leave yard. where two banking engines - 47276 & 47308 - have just come on to rear of train. One of the banking engines gives series of whistles, then 42922 starts its train. Banking engines take up load, train passes by, out of yard, and on through Bromsgrove Station, accelerating up incline. Then goes under road bridge, on towards Blackwell. Banking engines drop back, then both wait for opportunity to return light to Bromsgrove. 44806 is waiting in Bromsgrove yard, to pull Bristol-Newcastle passenger train. It gives series of whistles. Is banked by 8406 & 8404. Similar, but also different, sequence of events, to previous...
2) Princes Risborough, Bucks, rec. summer 1961: King Edward II (6023) whistles, pulling Wolverhampton-London train through Princes Risborough Station, after going under road bridge, then up 1:167 climb to Saunderton Tunnel. King Edward VII (6001) comes in opposite direction, downhill toward P. Risborough Station, with London-Liverpool Express. Templecombe, Soms, rec .summer 1960: driver of 3720 sings as engine runs past light, while in background 34002 'Salisbury' propels train of empty coaches toward Tmplcmb Station... 34038 'Lynton' leaves Station, wheels slipping, on 1:100 gradient, heads away West, with Exeter Express...engine whistles in distance, leaves far end of Station, while 3720 heads past, toward yard sidings, pulling goods wagons...a 'Battle of Britain' class 'Pacific' whistles warning, goes down gradient, through Station, toward Salisbury, pulling Exeter-London, while 31637 leaves Station, pulling empty coaches toward yard sidings.
3) Shap Wells, Cumbria, rec. May 1960: cuckoo calls, moorland birds dive overhead. In distance, toward Scout Green, 44840 comes up 1:75 gradient from Tebay... In opposite direction, an 8.F class 2-8-0 rumbles out from cutting, heading southbound goods train down to Scout Green. 44840 approaches at head of northbound goods train, with 42404 giving banking assistance on 5 mile climb from Tebay. Exhaust beats of the two engines merge, as they go past, toward deep rock cutting to Shap Summit. On moorland road, some children walk back toward lonely farmhouse.
Scotland-England border, rec. May 1961 (now-closed Carlisle-Edinburgh line): 60873 'Coldstreamer' climbs an 8-mile 1:75 gradient, pulling northbound goods train, without banking. Distinctive beat of three cylinder engine echoes back from hills, and from buildings of Steele Road Station. 60873 brings train rumbling past Station, over road bridge, and heads toward moors, against strong wind. Long twisting climb to Whitrope Summit, 100ft above sea level.
Side Two :-
1) Castejon de Ebro, Spain, rec. Dec 1968 (5'6" gauge line): flock of sheep are being driven alongside track, toward level crossing. Occasional sheep bells, drowned by warning bell at level crossing, as barriers are lowered for 2104 4-8-2 approaching from Zaragoza. It whistles, and brings train clattering past, over crossing, then slows at station beyond...2406 2-8-0 waiting in this station, with train for Madrid, is given 'right-away'. Engine whistles and hisses out from station, over crossing, round a curve, onto Madrid line. 'Confederation' class 4-8-4 (2003) is ready to leave Castejon, with morning train from Vigo. Whistles, the huge green engine starts out from station, level crossing barriers close to traffic. Heavy train heads away, down main line toward Zaragoza.
