A ‘ship of the desert’ helps keep the pastoralists of Togdeer, Somaliland, afloat in a sea of dry land. In these arid landscapes about 60% of the people have to move every season, seeking fresh pasture and water. But in recent years the rains have dried up, driving food prices up.
Step forward, Oxfam Unwrapped camels. Their nutritious milk is already feeding whole families and if you know an animal better suited to desert life, then get in touch!
In Somaliland, the camel is untouchable both as a means of getting around, and support when pitching camp. They might be able to go for days without drinking, but the people aren’t so lucky and the camels’ milk can keep people going when all the natural resources run dry. Late in the dry season, particularly, families depend for their milk almost entirely on camels.
Ahmed Hassan received a camel from Oxfam Unwrapped. He says: “This camel will make my life so much easier. Before I was not sure if I would be able to continue our way of life. But today I have great hope. I thank Allah, Oxfam and all who brought them to us.”
