When Makata Magalla attends reading classes in Burkina Faso, West Africa, she shares a desk with her baby. They both share a bright future, too.
In Burkina Faso, only 20% of the adult population would be able to read the words ‘adult literacy’ and the 2008 United Nations Development Program Report ranked Burkina Faso as the country with the lowest level of literacy in the world.
But Makata is different. She attends Mayni Ag Elmorene’s education classes – which are funded by Oxfam Unwrapped – and is learning to read.
Mayni, Makata’s teacher, says: “Oxfam pays my salary, and for our desks and textbooks. People always thank me for giving them a new start in life.”
