Before Oxfam Unwrapped reached Daikundi Province, Afghanistan, Zahra, 18, wasn’t well read. But now she’s well chuffed.
Several years since the fall of the Taleban, Afghanistan remains one of the poorest countries in the world with an average life expectancy of just 43 and widespread security problems. Girls’ education was restricted under the Taleban regime and although girls can now attend school, it can still be tough to get a decent education.
The library and other equipment is part of a consolidated programme that will lift educational standards, and, consequently, the local boys and girls out of poverty. Because of Oxfam Unwrapped’s desks, chairs, laboratories and libraries, Zahra can read her way to a better life.
“When I heard there was going to be a new laboratory and library in our school, I was so excited I ran straight to my family and shared the news. It is a dream come true that our school is going to be equipped with all these materials!”
