Everyone has a stake in the climate change debate, because all of us are being affected. ‘Extraordinary’ events, such as cyclones and floods, are increasingly frequent and it’s poor people that are hit first and worst. Climate change affects us all.
This gift supports eco-experts who campaign to raise awareness of environmental issues such as climate change and forest management at home and abroad.
For example, Cambodia is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change - such as flooding and drought - because a large number of people depend on climate-sensitive livelihoods such as agriculture, fishing and raising livestock.
In Cambodia, Oxfam have trained local people how to minimise the impact of climate change and how to lobby local government to help reduce its effects. Oxfam have supported communities to form water committees, which have lobbied their local authority to take climate change into account. It is important that local people have a say in government climate-change adaptation plans as they have first hand knowledge of climate change and it’s impacts.
