In places where the national grid is non-existent, solar panels can be the answer. The cost of fuel is rising globally, which means a dependency on diesel is not an option for many people. In areas suffering from drought, conflict and disease outbreaks, an alternative source of energy is desperately needed.
Solar power is a great alternative to diesel.
Oxfam-installed solar panels have made a difference to the lives of people living in Bangladesh. Solar powered electricity has helped people increase the family income as they are able to keep their shops and market stalls open later. Children are able to study in the evening and people save money as they do not need to buy Kerosene for lighting purposes.
Iman Ali is a shop owner in Kunderpara. He says: "The day I got electric connection in my shop, I stayed until 2 a.m. in the morning, I am very happy as my income has increased yet I have to pay very little for this."
In Sudan, solar powered fridges are used to store veterinary medicine. Local animal health workers have been trained in operating and maintaining the fridges. This facility will improve the lives of farmers and the health of their livestock as animal vaccines are most effective when they are stored correctly.
