Trees and forests aren't just a vital part of the eco-system. They also make the perfect natural flood barrier. So in communities like Beni in Bolivia, where flooding regularly threatens lives and livelihoods, saving trees can help to save lives.
Jonathan Guzmán Galindo is 14. He's a representative of the Green Brigade – an Oxfam supported school's initiative that’s teaching children in Beni about the importance of trees. Now Jonathan’s classmates know how to plant trees and are helping to protect the community from severe flooding.
"I want to teach everyone about the importance of planting trees, to go to the other schools to train and teach them about trees too. We need to plant trees, especially ones with strong roots that can help to resist the floodwaters."
