For people in remote communities, medical care can mean a trek to the nearest town. This gift funds community clinics, providing medical equipment and training nurses and midwives to work in isolated areas
Neli Abuladze lives in Vashlovani, in the mountains of Georgia. When she was struck down with sickness, slurred speech and blurred vision in the middle of the night, she was lucky to be within reach of an Oxfam Unwrapped health centre. She was diagnosed with food poisoning and treated with intravenous fluids. She says: “The hospital is 15km away – and I can’t afford the taxi”.
There are ten Oxfam Unwrapped Health Centres in Neli’s region, which have helped more than 1000 people, most of them women and children. They also provide security for more than 15,000 people in Ajara region who now have better access to health care if they need it.
Neli says: “I was lucky that the scheme operates in the village. It has saved me a lot of money and a lot of time, and ultimately my health condition has improved.”
