In Bihar, India, frequent flooding can bring disease and death. But Oxfam Unwrapped hygiene kits – which include water treatment tablets, insect repellent, medicine, sanitary towels, even nail trimmers – help fight infection and keep disease at bay.
Oxfam’s River Basin Project helps people in 80 villages in Bihar to prepare for the inevitable flooding that comes their way during monsoon season, and it’s an increasing problem as the effects of climate change continue to grow.
These are some of the world’s poorest communities, and some villages can be completely isolated by the rising waters, cut off from public health centres. When floodwaters arrive, the effects of poor hygiene such as illness through water-borne disease will quickly follow. This where these little kits can make all the difference, preventing minor ailments becoming major problems.
